Athletes need more than just heart. Sometimes, they need extra incentive to be the best they can be. Arrielle Blake of Fletcher is 15-years-old. She recently took on the Alcatraz Invitational in Northern California.
Alcatraz Island in San Francisco's Bay area is the home of the historic and infamous prison. For decades, it kept some of the worst criminals at bay. According to the penitentiary, no one escaped successfully. Anyone who tried would only encounter the cold and choppy waters. Two drowned and a handful of others were declared missing and presumed drowned. Arrielle made those chilling conditions her latest aquatic conquest.
It took months of training to prepare for choppy and chilly waters. Through her training, Blake focused on her goal by keeping her eyes on an unlikely prize. She made a deal with her parents that if she finished, she could get her belly button pierced. She did just that.
Arrielle tackled Alcatraz and lives to tell about it. She now competes with the West Henderson High swim team.
