Special Report: Tannerite Terror
Updated: Friday, August 2 2013, 10:23 PM EDT
A legal explosive is now being used for illegal purposes here in the mountains.
Tannerite is made to be an exploding target, used for rifle practice. You buy the canister, combine the ingredients, shake it up, shoot it, and it explodes.
But over the last three months in Rutherford County, there have been 2 confirmed reports of illicit use. In one case, a group of teenagers set off explosions that had residents miles away wondering if there had been an earthquake.
The director of the North Carolina Police Chief's Association said that any restrictions on the sale or use of tannerite would need to come from the state level. Maryland banned the product last year. In Newtown, Connecticut - the site of a deadly school shooting several months ago - there's talk of placing restrictions on where tannerite can be used.
