Holiday shopping season is coming up and if you have a tech-savvy teen to buy for, this segment is for you. Karen Schulz of Verizon Wireless stopped by the morning show with some cool gadgets.
Today’s teens love their smartphones, but with great technology comes great responsibility. According to a recent survey by Asurion, 57% of teens reported having their phone lost or stolen and 38% of parents have had to replace at least one cell phone for their kids in the last 18 months. Parents should consider all their options for protecting the tech they give to teens this holiday season. Here's a few from Verizon Wireless.
Total Mobile Protection ($10, monthly)
Total Mobile Protection is a new Verizon program that includes insurance, extends the manufacturer’s warranty, and offers next day device replacement for $10 a month. TMP also offers premium tech support and security to protect mobile devices from viruses, malware, and other mobile threats with the Verizon Mobile Security app.
Where’s My Droid? (Free, Google Play Store)
More than half of teens have reported having a lost or stolen phone. If you’ve lost your Droid nearby, you can set it to ring or vibrate until you locate it. If the phone has been lost or stolen, you can locate it on a map using GPS. You can also hide your incoming texts. With the Pro version for just $3.99, you can remotely lock the device and wipe the phone and SIM card data. There are similar apps for iPhone.
Lifeproof Case ($89.99, options for iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S4)
Sometimes, it just happens. You drop your phone in the parking lot or spill a glass of water on your phone. You don’t have to worry about those accidents ruining your shiny new device with the Lifeproof case. This case makes your smartphone waterproof, as well as dirt, snow, and shockproof. It’s the thinnest, lightest, and strongest all-protective case available. Smartphones in a Lifeproof case can be submerged in water six-and-a-half feet deep for up to one hour with no damage.
FamilyBase ($5, monthly)
FamilyBase is Verizon’s new family monitoring system. If you are buying a smartphone for your teen for the very first time this holiday season, FamilyBase can give you peace of mind. For just $5 a month per account, you can see who is included in your child’s contact list, monitor who and when they are calling and texting, and view what apps they are using and for how long. You also have the ability to remotely lock your child’s phone.
Mophie JuicePack Powerstation ($79.99)
The JuicePack Powerstation from Mophie is perfect for teens that are always on the go. They’ll never be able to say they missed mom’s call because their phone died! This is a portable charging device that uses any USB cable to charge your smartphone, tablet or other device. The Powerstation is compact and lightweight, easy to slip into a backpack or purse. It offers a quick boost or full charge for your device. When the charging station is empty, simply plug it into a wall outlet and charge it up at home.
