APD Suspicious Bag Investigation

Updated: Friday, February 21 2014, 11:31 PM EST

Friday at
9:20am Asheville police responded to their own scare right inside their headquarters.
An unidentified woman walked into the lobby and according to APD Deputy Chief
Wade Wood, dropped the duffle off without saying a thing.

APD called
in their bomb squad.  News Thirteen viewer Les Hanson captured the entire event
on his new cell phone.

He shot one
bomb squad member getting all suited up in protective gear including a helmet.

The officer then walks
into APD headquarters to tie rope to the duffel and then pull it out.

He fires the water
cannon into the duffel. It’s deemed safe. No explosive device is found. Instead
Les videos the officer pulling clothes out of the duffel and then he is seen
giving the thumbs up, all clear sign to his police colleagues.

“I don’t
think it was overkill,” said Les Hanson. “Because they must have been tipped
off to it being something suspicious.”

APD has photos of the
woman but would still like to know what was behind the episode. Call APD with
any tips at 828-255-5050.
