Brevard Sewage Spill
Updated: Friday, January 11 2013, 07:38 PM EST
City leaders in Brevard say too much rain too fast caused almost 84-thousand gallons of untreated sewage to overflow from a pump station. They say heavy rain early Wednesday morning caused the spill from their Gallimore Road discharge site. Response teams recovered 10-thousand gallons, but the majority leaked into a nearby creek and eventually the French Broad River. Brevard’s city manager says there's no risk to residents since any drinking water coming from any source has to be treated and filtered first. Joseph Moore says the nearly two and a half inches of rain the day after Christmas overwhelmed the sewer system...but played a positive role as well by dissipating the spill. Moore says the city has been improving the sewer system.. having replaced two major trunk lines and installing monitoring devices.
