Updated: Tuesday, January 8 2013, 08:21 PM EST

A Transylvania County man will make his first court appearance Tuesday on charges tied to a stabbing in Brevard. Police have arrested 30-year-old John Abbott for stabbing 29-year-old Adam Rector multiple times at a home on Boxwood Lane.

Brevard police say the stabbing occurred Sunday night after Rector intervened on a domestic dispute between Abbott and his mother. They say Abbott pushed his mother and then began choking her. Rector came over to help her. Abbott then stabbed Rector with a pocket knife nine times in his arm, leg and chest.

When police arrived, Abbott turned himself in. Authorities say Abbott had been drinking. Abbott is charged with assault with intent to kill resulting in serious bodily injury, simple assault on a female and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Rector is at Mission Hospital. He is listed in Good condition
