Buncombe Icy Road Concerns
Updated: Monday, February 4 2013, 10:39 AM EST
A small stretch of road is causing big problems in Buncombe County. Within twelve hours, Fairview firefighters say they worked two accidents where drivers slid off Highway 74 and ended up upside down in a ditch. The trouble spot is on 74 Eastbound near the 700 block of Mine Hole Gap, between Reynolds and Fairview. Locals say an underground spring often overflows onto that part of the road, especially after heavy rains like we had recently. They say many motorists are unaware of the icy patch, and hit it while traveling too fast.
Longtime resident Wayne Lytle says he usually slows to 25 mph on that part of 74 when temperatures are near freezing. He and resident Nathan Poore say better drainage and signs warning of the icy area would help the situation. Fairview fire chief Scott Jones says no one was injured in either crash. However, troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol confirm one of the accident victims was arrested for d.u.i.
