Campground Flooded

Updated: Wednesday, January 16 2013, 10:06 PM EST

The rain let up for a time on Wednesday, but not before filling up area rivers causing many of them to flood.

The Tuckasegee River in Swain County caused a lot trouble for residents of the Bear Hunter Campground just outside Bryson City. It crested at about 12 and a half feet at 12:30 Wednesday morning. Flood stage is ten feet.

The river has gone down quite a bit since then. But overnight, folks had to pack up and move out fast. They said as the water approached its peak in the middle of the night, authorities came by to evacuate them and get them out of harm's way. In many cases, campers and RV's were rolled to higher ground.

Resident John Porter says after this experience, he'll undo his sewer hook ups and cap them in the future. Residents say authorities were especially concerned about debris or even propane tanks being swept away in the rushing river and crashing into a bridge downstream.

Many campers and RV's had returned to their camp spots by late Wednesday and residents say they're beginning to get back to normal, but along with some lessons learned.

Swain County Emergency Management expects river levels to continue dropping.
