Charges After Deadly Crash

Updated: Wednesday, April 24 2013, 07:07 AM EDT

An Asheville man is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault in a car wreck that killed his daughter.

David Jones made his first appearance Tuesday morning.

The wreck happened last December when the car flew off an embankment and landed in a city parking lot.

David Jones stood in front of a judge this morning for his first court appearance on manslaughter and assault charges in the death of his three-year old daughter last December.

He's been in jail since the wreck and police arrested him yesterday, more than four months after the wreck.

Witnesses say Jones was traveling at a high rate of speed through city streets when he drove off South Market street.

His car plunged off a steep embankment and went airborne before crashing in the public works parking lot, injuring a city employee.

A check of his record in Henderson County reveals a previous DWI charge and a family member told News 13 his license was limited because of siezures that he had in the past.

David Jones' daughter, three-year-old Maddie Jones, died from her injuries following the wreck.

Jones could be sentenced to more than twelve years in prison if he’s convicted of all four charges. He’s in jail under $50,000 bond.
