Church Scam Alert

Updated: Friday, April 12 2013, 08:47 AM EDT
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is calling for the attention of all church organizations about a scam that is going around our region.  It has been brought to the attention of the Sheriff’s Office of a scam taking advantage of our church organizations generosity.

The scam involves one or more con-artists making an appearance and/or calling and trying to elicit money. The story used is a family’s vehicle has broken down or been involved in an accident on their way home, usually out of state.

To make the story more convincing, names and numbers of law enforcement, a tow truck company, or a mechanic may be provided. When called, these subjects will sound convincing and make the story seem more plausible.  However, this is just part of the scam and these officers and businesses do not exist.

At the date of this release, two churches in our area have been approached. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office would like to reach out and ask all churches to contact our office to provide an email address for their church. This list will be used to strengthen relations between law enforcement and church organization by encouraging communication and sending out alerts when needed.

Church organizations are asked to call or email their contact information to Senior Deputy Dwight McMahan at (828) 631-1123 or ddmcmahan@jacksonnc.org

Any church who has been approached is also encouraged to call Deputy McMahan and file an incident report.Church Scam Alert
