Deputies: Father Shoots Son in the Head

Updated: Monday, December 31 2012, 05:48 PM EST

A Christmas night shooting lands a father in police custody, and his son clinging to life. "It was chaos like something you'd see on TV," said Kenneth Shelton, a neighbor.

Shelton said he was jolted out bed by the sound of police radios and cop cars. "They just told me they had a crime scene," said Shelton.

Deputies say a family dispute was behind the commotion.  "It was obvious there was some type of domestic disturbance here," Sheriff James "Buddy" Harwood said.

Harwood told News 13's Mario Boone that John Wilson, Sr. pulled a gun and shot his 33-year-old son, John Jr., in the head.

"I found out through a phone call he's in pretty bad shape," said Shelton.  The sheriff confirmed there's a strong chance Junior won't survive.  The SBI was brought in with the expectation this will turn into a murder investigation.

"It's heartbreaking, you know.  I just want to go sit down somewhere and cry.  They're just like family," Shelton said.

Shelton told Boone that Junior might've been high on dope and possibly trying to rob his father when the shooting happened.  Court records show Junior has a long criminal record, and was just released from prison for habitual drunk driving.

"The father done everything he could to help his son, you know," according to Shelton.
