An elderly Henderson County woman feels lucky to be alive today after being attacked by a neighbor's pit bull. 89-year old Carmie Shields says the dog was allowed to roam the neighborhood and Wednesday it came after her as she headed up the steps to her home.
Shields suffered several gashes to her forearm and received stitches to close the wounds. Doctors kept her in the hospital over night after she complained of chest pains. Shield's daughter, Linda believes "the dog needs to be put down." Animal services now has custody of the dog which has been placed in a ten day quarantine.
The dog's owner, David Swayngim has indicated he wants his dog back. Animal control officials say the pit bull was deemed dangerous and that Swayngim will have to meet some very strict guidelines in order to keep the animal or face possible criminal charges. Swayngim was cited by officers for failing to restrain the animal to his property.
