DSS Forgery Guilty Plea

Updated: Monday, April 15 2013, 07:38 PM EDT

A Swain County DSS worker pleads guilty to charges she altered documents to cover up abuse in a toddler’s death investigation. Candace Lassiter pled guilty Monday to three felony counts of forgery in the case of 15-month-old Aubrey Littlejohn.

Aubrey’s mother, Jasmine Littlejohn, says she disagrees with a plea bargain that dismissed three additional obstruction of justice charges. Aubrey’s great-aunt, Lady Bird Powell, pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter after Aubrey died because of abuse and neglect while in Powell’s care.

Court officials say Lassiter could be sentenced to as much as two years in prison. Littlejohn says that’s too little time, and that she should serve time for the three charges that were dropped. Lassiter’s attorney has advised her not to speak to the media. DSS officials say she has been put on administrative leave. Her sentencing date is scheduled for August 12th.
