DSS Worker Pleads Guilty

Updated: Monday, April 15 2013, 12:42 PM EDT
A Swain County DSS worker has pleaded guilty to trying to cover-up the death of a toddler. As part of a plea agreement this morning, Candice Lassiter pled guilty to 3 counts of felony forgery. She was also originally charged with obstruction of justice, but those charges were dismissed as part of the agreement.

Lassiter was accused of falsifying documents about how DSS handled abuse allegations in the case of 15-month-old Aubrey Littlejohn. The toddler died in January, 2011 while in the care of her great aunt, Ladybird Powell. Powell has already pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child abuse.

Lassiter will be sentenced at a later date. She faces between 18 and 24 months in prison. A second DSS worker charged in case, Craig Smith, is scheduled to go to trial in August.DSS Worker Pleads Guilty
