A town remembers a dedicated firefighter who lost his life in a tragic accident.
39-year-old Captain Kenny Edwards died when a tree fell on him at a jobsite in Burke County. He was a tree company employee clearing the right-of-way near power lines in Valdese.
He was also a volunteer firefighter in his home town of Ellenboro in Rutherford County. He began his service as a 14-year-old junior firefighter. His grandfather and father both served before him.
Rescue workers say he will be remembered as being the department's first man on the scene of many calls. That includes last year's tornado that devastated a neighborhood near Ellenboro.
The family plans to receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Padgett and King Mortuary in Forest City. Captain Edwards' funeral will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Glenwood Baptist Church in Bostic.
