Fatal Standoff

Updated: Friday, April 5 2013, 10:49 AM EDT
A man in Haywood County kept officers at bay for hours, holed up with a gun.

Investigators say 27 year old Jeremy Shipman, who had recently moved here from Florida, fired at Deputy Doug Carver Thursday morning.

It happened at Shipman’s home between Canton and Bethel off Garden Lane.

That led to a stand-off that ended with Shipman using his rifle to end his own life.

The Haywood County Sheriff's Office says Shipman didn't show up for work.

A concerned co-worker called, and Deputy Carver went to check on him. But when he did, investigators say Shipman fired several times.

Deputy Carver was not hurt...nor did he return fire, but he did call for back-up.

Officers tried to communicate with Shipman, but got no response.

After tear gas and a loud flash bomb failed too...a SWAT team went into the house and found Shipman dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The SBI will investigate since an officer was involved in shooting.

The Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Carver is grateful to be able to go home safely to his family.
