Fill the Boot for MDA

Updated: Thursday, March 28 2013, 08:23 AM EDT
A group of local firefighters help raise money and awareness for a rare disease.

Asheville Firefighters took to the streets today to ask residents to "Fill the Boot" for muscle dystrophy.

All the money raised goes towards the Muscular Dystrophy Association, or MDA.

The funds will help a variety of things including a week long summer camp for kids, support groups and seminars.

Organizers are thrilled to have the Asheville Fire Department on their side.

Rachel Crescibene, Muscular Dystrophy Association, "they are a big part of MDA and a large supporter of ours, so we treasure this relationship very much."

Last year, the Asheville Fire Department raised $10,000 for MDA and finished 9th in the state.

This year their goal is to make the top 5, which is a goal of around $15,000.

There will be two more Boot Drives, another in June and October.Fill the Boot for MDA
