Gun Control Fails

Updated: Thursday, April 18 2013, 10:29 PM EDT
Attempts to pass tighter gun control laws in the U.S. senate have failed.  Supporters of bi-partisan legislation couldn't get enough votes.  The proposal would have expanded background checks and required states to report mentally ill patients to the federal government's background database.

Supporters felt it was a good first step in creating a law to protect innocent citizens but others feared it was another step to erode individuals constitutional right to bear arms.

Gun dealers say they support background checks.  But they were unclear how the law would help since background checks are already required in North Carolina.  The other concern was the reporting of mentally ill people.  They say there's no system in place to track or report people with mental illness and that doing so would be a violation of an individuals privacy rights.
