Gun Show Ban Debate
Updated: Monday, January 7 2013, 05:00 PM EST
An Asheville city councilman is calling for a ban on gun shows within city limits citing an ordinance that's been on the books for almost two decades. A 1994 Asheville ordinance bans weapons on city-owned property.
Cecil Bothwell says that since the school shootings in Newtown, many Asheville residents have been calling him and saying the city needs to do more to promote stronger gun regulation. Bothwell believes the law that restricts guns and knives on city-owned property is a good place to start. He says it should apply to the gun shows that are held in Asheville every year, but admits it might be a tough sell.
Bothwell's proposal must first be considered by the city attorney before it has any chance of going to council. There is also a question regarding the definition of city limits and how that might pertain to a popular gun show location.
