Haywood Seeks More Use For Landfill

Updated: Monday, January 14 2013, 08:55 PM EST

Haywood County says it could save millions by allowing more waste and more counties to use its landfill. Right now only Haywood County trash is goes into the White Oak Landfill. But county leaders are asking for a permit modification from the NC Department of Natural Resources to increase daily tonnage and to allow 18 counties in Western North Carolina to use the facility. They say this can be done safely and save the county almost 60 million dollars over 30 years.  But some residents worry about the future impact on their land.  Many plan on attending a public hearing in Waynesville at Haywood County's State Cooperative Extension Office Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Any permit modification needs approval from the Department of Natural Resources.
