Henderson Co. Toxic Water

Updated: Tuesday, January 29 2013, 08:00 PM EST

Homeowners in a Henderson County neighborhood have stopped drinking their well water after state officials tell them it’s contaminated with a cancer-causing chemical.

Officials say 12 of the 17 wells in the Dana community tested have high levels of the pesticide dieldrin. Some wells have hundred times above the state limit for the chemical.

People who received these notifications switched to bottled water immediately. Judy Pressley tells News 13 she drank the water for 32 years and served it to her children and grandchildren. She’s worried about their health and they plan to see a doctor to test them for the pesticide.

State notifications say drinking the water is not recommended. However, water quality officials say while the contamination is above state limits, the amount of dieldrin in the water is extremely low.

A meeting is planned next week to address the issue with residents in the community around Academy, Blue House, and Sugarloaf Roads.
