Hunting With Silencers Bill

Updated: Friday, April 26 2013, 10:01 PM EDT

Hunters could use silencers on their guns in North Carolina if lawmakers agree on a change in wildlife laws.

Gunfire is loud and some shooters say silencers would allow them to enjoy their sport outdoors without disturbing neighbors. But silencers, also called suppressors, are illegal without federal approval to own one. For those who have that approval, the new law could allow silencers for hunting.

Opponents say silencers would take away the warning people get from the sound of a gunshot. They say lawmakers should strengthen gun controls, not weaken the gun laws we now have.

The bill in the senate was introduced by lawmakers in the eastern part of the state. It passed its third reading in the senate Thursday.
