Names of Teen Triple Fatal Accident Victims Released

Updated: Friday, January 4 2013, 04:49 PM EST

Troopers have released the names of three teens killed in a head-on crash Tuesday.  They are identified as Matt Strickland, 14, Shawn Hutchison, 17, and David Hutchison, 18.  Matt and Shawn were students at T.C. Roberson High.  David left Roberson in 2008, according to school leaders.

Shawn and David were brothers, the Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened shortly before 2 p.m. in Avery's Creek near the intersection of Brevard Road and Ledbetter Road.

State troopers said the car the teens were traveling in hydroplaned, slid into the opposite lane, and slammed head-on into a tanker truck.  A witness told officials the semi truck then dragged the car about 100 feet into an embankment.

All three teens were killed on impact.  The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Anthony Carland of Mills River, was taken to Mission Hospital.  He is currently in fair condition.

Troopers say David was driving and his speed was a factor in the crash, however alcohol is not suspected.  No charges are expected against Carland.
