Swain County deputies arrested a man early Friday morning after a five-hour standoff. They arrested Charles Guess at 1:21 a.m. The incident began at 6:58 Thursday night. Someone called authorities with reports of a man waving an assault rifle on Highway 19 in the Nantahala Gorge near the Nantahala Camp Ground. When authorities arrived, Guess barricaded himself in a home and began firing at deputies. Guess was in contact with Swain County dispatch throughout the standoff. They eventually arrested him. There were no injuries and charges are pending.
Highway 19 was closed during the standoff, but it has since reopened.
