P.A.R.I. New Security Measures

Updated: Tuesday, January 1 2013, 02:46 PM EST

New security measures are underway at a mountain research station after thousands of dollars worth of equipment is stolen. It happened Christmas Eve at Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute near Rosman.

More than $80,000 worth of meteorites, lab instruments and equipment were stolen. The meteorites were part of a display used to teach students about outer space.  The thieves also ruined the expensive display cases.

The question researchers must answer is how to protect astronomically expensive equipment in such a remote location.

Transylvania County deputies arrested Brian Koontz of Balsam Grove and charged him with felony breaking and entering and larceny. Robin Baldwin Jr. of Hendersonville faces the same charges. He remains at large.

Call Crime Stoppers at (828) 255-5050 if you have any information about the crime or know where police can locate Robin Baldwin Jr.
