Protecting Seniors From Scams

Updated: Thursday, March 28 2013, 08:23 AM EDT

Senior citizens are often targeted in scams by con artists. Experts met at AB-Tech Wednesday to talk about ways to protect them.

Buncombe County Triad put on the workshop called "Know Who To Trust.” They say seniors get all kinds of pitches on the phone, from e-mail, and the internet, often in an attempt to swindle them out of money. All the panelists say don't bite and don't fall for the lines.

Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan knows them well saying, "Your e-mail has reached your limit.  Your bank is asking for information and asking for birth dates, social security. Any time you're asked for any kind of identifying information. Do not send it.” Sheriff Duncan says hang up on those unsolicited calls, get some advice from someone you trust and if you have any questions, call authorities.
