Record Number of Meth Labs Busted

Updated: Wednesday, January 9 2013, 06:58 PM EST

Startling statistics out this week, showing more meth labs were found in North Carolina last year than ever before.  At the same time, electronic tracking of pseudoephedrine is stopping illegal sales and leading law enforcement to more meth labs. NPLEx tracks the purchases of the drug and blocks customers from buying more than the legal daily and monthly amount.  But, the number of meth labs in the state still managed to reach a new high in 2012.

"For the most part, it does an excellent job in stopping sales beyond the limit," said Attorney General Roy Cooper Wednesday.  "Now you still have criminals who are trying to organize and pay people to go buy their legal limit as many places as they can."

State-wide and locally, the number of meth labs has gone up.  Including Polk County, where 10 labs were found in 2012, more than ever before. Officials say the reason for the rise is due to a simpler way to make the drug, called the one pot method.  The method is easier, prompting more addicts to make their own instead of purchasing from a dealer.

Attorney General Cooper says addicts need to be treated to  help reduce the demand.  Cooper says he's requested more agents to help bust more labs in the future.
