Settlement Money

A local nonprofit is celebrating a huge victory Thursday night. Pisgah Legal Services is one of four nonprofits in North Carolina to be awarded nearly $130,000 in a class action lawsuit settlement. It's an amount the nonprofit says they desperately needed.

In 2004, attorney Michael Wimer filed a class action law suit on behalf of North Carolina consumers against large companies. Last December, those companies settled out of court and it was determined that $2.75 million was to be distributed among five states. $520,000 of that went to North Carolina.

Wimer chose four non-profits and on his list was Pisgah Legal Services in Asheville. The money they received will help close a budget shortfall among other things.

In 2012, the non profit served more than 13,000 people in Western North Carolina. Attorney Michael Wimer says it's good to give back to these non-profits that represent those who need help.
