Snow In Forecast
Updated: Monday, March 4 2013, 09:36 PM EST
A late winter storm in the forecast has road crews chaining up snowplows and mixing salt and sand in Madison and Yancey counties.
Workers at the Burnsville NCDOT maintenance facility used loaders to mix up salt and sand that could be needed Tuesday morning. That’s because there’s a chance of freezing rain and sleet. Heavy snow is predicted in the high mountain counties Tuesday night and Wendesday.
During the winter, NCDOT engineers say they watch their supplies closely to make sure they can keep roads as safe as possible. Hardware stores are gearing up for the storm, rolling out pallets of ice melt and snow shovels. They say customers have avoided buying snow supplies because of the mild winter.
NCDOT officials urge people to stock up on what they need Tuesday. They’re hoping people will stay off the roads when the storm hits.
