Special Report: Modern Moonshiners Part 1

Updated: Tuesday, February 25 2014, 07:34 PM EST
A mountain tradition hidden away in the woods of North Carolina for decades is gaining new popularity today.  It's the production of moonshine, illegal corn liquor.

Moonshine has grown in popularity in recent years with the development of Reality TV programs about the illegal production.  Moonshiners are seeing a demand for their product they haven't seen in years.

UNCA history professor and author Dan Pierce believes, "there's more illegal production of moonshine today than there was say back in 2000" Pierce wrote the book titled "Corn in a Jar, Moonshining in the Great Smokey Mountains."  He says legendary moonshiner Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton has helped create a moonshine renaissance that's resulted in a growing moonshine industry.
