Teacher Charged With Child Sex Abuse

Updated: Wednesday, January 23 2013, 10:19 PM EST

An elementary school teacher in Asheville has been accused in the alleged sexual assault of a child. The arrest of Aaron Cook is just the latest in string of local cases involving kids and adults.

Cook is a second grade teacher at Vance Elementary School in Asheville. He faces two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 16. Officials say the alleged victim is not a student and that the alleged assault did not happen on campus.

School social workers who deal with abuse issues across Buncombe County say there are many reasons it's tough for kids to come forward. Age can be a big factor.

"Sometimes those young children, if that's all they've ever known, they may not understand what inappropriate touch means or what does a trusted adult mean," said Lisa Von Dohlen.

School officials say they are always watching for cases of possible abuse and that most being reported do not involve teachers.
