UNCA Concert Honors Mandela

Updated: Monday, February 24 2014, 07:27 AM EST
College students and local senior citizens team-up for a musical tribute to the late Nelson Mandela.

The concert at Lipinsky Auditorium at UNCA featured the school's University Singers, along with the Studio-18 Jazz Vocal Ensemble and the Reuter Center Singers.

The performance included songs from South Africa to remember the anti-apartheid hero.

Dr. Melodie Galloway, UNCA associate professor, "we don't just sing songs that are cool to sing, there's an educational piece to it, it's academic, and it's history, it's meaning, it's relevant, so that's why with the death of Mandela we wanted to sing and move and celebrate his life."

Dr. Galloway says she picked songs sung at the time of apartheid rule, but also some that were written since, to represent everything Mandela had lived through.UNCA Concert Honors Mandela
