Vote ID Bill Debate

Updated: Wednesday, April 17 2013, 09:41 PM EDT

The topic of whether or not North Carolina will require photo identification at the polling place is being debated in Raleigh this week.

Supporters of the Voter ID Bill say it's intended to stop fraud. It calls for proof of identity using one of several authorized ID's. That's on top of current voter registration.

Opponents say the measure is unnecessary because studies show voter fraud in North Carolina is rare. They also argue out-of-town students trying to vote on campus and senior citizens without ID's would be excluded from the process.

If the Voter ID Bill passes, it will take effect for the 2016 election.
