Water Main Break Closes Swannanoa River Rd

A water line break closes a road that links two major sections of Asheville.
Around 1:30 p.m. Friday, high-pressure water undermined one lane of Swannanoa River Road near its intersection with Tunnel Road. The failure was discovered before the road collapsed into the washout. No one was injured.
Steve Shoaf with city of Asheville water resources says he believes it's an 8-inch cast iron water main, 50-60 year old pipe that broke.
The water created a mini-lake near Lowe’s, and cut off water pressure there and at Walgreen’s. Crews spent the afternoon digging out the weakened soil and pumping water out of the washout. The work is blocking a major connector between Biltmore Avenue and Tunnel Road. Drivers say it adds five to ten minute detours around I-40, I-240, and through the Oakley and Kenilworth neighborhoods.
Water resources officials plan to have the repairs completed by Saturday afternoon.
