Winter Hangs On

On this first day of March, you may be ready for spring and warmer temperatures. But winter is still here, especially along the mountaintops.
At 5,000 feet, it's cold and looks like winter with snow and ice that's still frosting the trees. The contrast is quite striking. You can look down into the valleys and see no snow at all. But come up higher, and winter is alive and well.
With snow remaining in the forecast, travelers adjusted their schedules Friday. These higher elevations might see 2 to 4 inches before ending sometime Saturday.
Residents are used to it keeping warm in a variety of ways including burning wood. Fire officials are reminding residents not to let their guards down this far into winter, and to continue taking safety precautions when heating their homes.
