World War Two Nurse Honored

Updated: Wednesday, April 24 2013, 08:36 PM EDT

They’re the greatest generation and not many are left. One World War II nurse in Haywood County got a special and long overdue honor Wednesday.

91-year-old Kathryn Holer was an Army nurse during the Battle of the Bulge, the bloodiest conflict of the war. Haywood County’s Veteran's Office and local American Legion Post organized a presentation of medals to honor her service, and they were given to her by a 93-year-old local soldier who was in the Battle of the Bulge.

Paul Willis says, “It’s nice that we're recognizing people like this.” With appreciation, Holer responds, “And I want to say thanks to everybody.”

Holer also received an American flag that flew over the US Capitol, presented to her from a representative of Congressman Mark Meadows’ office.
