Yancey Co. Rockslide Clean-Up

Updated: Monday, January 21 2013, 09:41 PM EST

Highway crews spend the weekend blasting rockslides and shoring up roadbeds washed out by last week's storm. They're working in Yancey County to reopen two roads blocked by the slides and the equipment to repair them.

Just last week, a house-size boulder landed on Highway 19 West and blocked the road for nearly five days. The rock fell away from the bank after steady rainfall. It nearly undermined the foundation of a home at the top of the cliff. Explosive experts found a way to blast the rock without damaging the house.

Crews are now hauling away the boulders to another repair project. Theyre using the rocks to shore up Possum Trot Road in south Yancey County 14 miles away. One lane of that road disappeared down a steep embankment. Engineers say Possum Trot is now open to two lanes of traffic on gravel covering the repair. The repaired section will be paved when the weather warms up.

Engineers say they hope to have the Highway 19 West rockslide cleared and open by Tuesday afternoon.
