NCAROLINA-NCAA

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina's players sound eager to have an early off week, which could help them get players back after they were sidelined in the opener due to an ongoing NCAA investigation.

The Tar Heels were missing 13 players in a close loss to LSU over the weekend, but they nearly rallied from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit. They don't play again until hosting Georgia Tech on Sept. 18.

Quarterback T.J. Yates says he'd normally perfer not to have an off week so early, but it's probably good for the Tar Heels considering all the distractions that have lingered amid the investigation.

ACC PLAYERS

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates and two Maryland players are among the Atlantic Coast Conference's players of the week.

The league on Tuesday announced that Terrapins defensive lineman Joe Vellano was honored, as was defensive back Kenny Tate. Florida State's Zebrie Sanders, Georgia Tech's Sean Bedford and Virginia's Oday Aboushi were chosen co-offensive linemen of the week.

Miami's Lamar Miller is the rookie of the week, and Clemson's Dawson Zimmerman is its top specialist.

Yates threw for a career-high 412 yards in an opening-weekend loss to LSU. Tate stopped Ricky Dobbs at the 1-yard line with 34 seconds left to preserve Maryland's win over Navy.

ACC'S NEW QBS

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- After years of stability under center, Jim Grobe is breaking in a new quarterback at Wake Forest.

Duke's David Cutcliffe certainly knows that feeling.

The Demon Deacons and Blue Devils meet this week in the first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season. They're two of the league's four teams who have new starting quarterbacks.

The first ACC starts for Wake Forest's Ted Stachitas and Duke's Sean Renfree will come against each other. That comes after they coasted to easy wins over outmanned FCS opponents in their starting debuts.

Most ACC teams welcomed back established, returning quarterbacks. Joining Stachitas and Renfree among the new faces is Maryland's Jamarr Robinson.
