Rain likely caused massive rocks to slide on I-40 and engineers say more rain in the forecast could be a solution as they focus on the cleanup effort to reopen the interstate in Haywood County.
Joel Setzer with the N.C. Department of Transportation said, "We have had some wetter weather than normal and some early freeze-thaws and we know those are contributing factors to rockslides."
Now Setzer believes rain could be a blessing, helping to naturally move unstable rocks down to the road for removal. D.O.T. officials say since the area's blocked off safety won't be a concern for citizens. Specific equipment will also be brought in from New York and Canada to bring the rock down and shave it.
