Heavy rains on Tuesday helped clear some of the unstable rocks from a slide on Interstate 40, but the clean-up process remains a dangerous and risky task.
Geologists with the N.C. Department of Transportation have devised a detailed plan of attack to remove the rock and stabilize the slope.
It involves bringing in a team of specialists from New York.
Geologists say the crews will be putting themselves in danger as they work, but they don't have a choice.
They must get the road re-opened as soon as possible.
Because of the risks, though, the DOT says clean-up will take longer than the three months originally expected.
An exact timeline has not yet been set.
Work is expected to start later this week, as crews begin drilling and blasting large boulders into smaller pieces.
