Eblen-Kimmel Charities began its annual heating assistance program Monday morning.
The mountain agency says between 250 and 300 families turned out for help.
Some were asked to return tomorrow because the charity can only handle so many people a day.
One person tells News 13 that Eblen is his last hope.
He says he's already been without power for about a month.
"It's been really rough, because we was relying on kerosene heater lamps. And it's been really hard on us. But Eblen's a good place and they really help out a lot," said Michael Taylor, of Asheville, who was waiting in line for help.
Eblen will offer heating assistance throughout the winter to Buncombe County residents.
The agency's executive director says that by the end of June the organization had already seen 30 percent more families than it saw all of last year.
