Investigators are on the scene of a small plane crash in Buncombe County.
The plane crashed around 5pm near the intersection of Upper Brush Creek Rd. and Bethany Church Rd. in the Fairview community. Authorities tell us the pilot tried to land in a cornfield, but clipped a tree and flipped over.
The pilot, James Monroe of Winston-Salem, and a passenger, James Hastings, were air-lifted to Mission Hospital in serious but stable condition. Authorities say both were alert and answering questions when they were transported. The plane, a Mooney M20C, is registered to Monroe.
Officials at Asheville Regional Airport says the plane was on approach when air traffic controllers lost contact with it about 4 miles out.
