U.S. Senator Kay Hagan announced that 27 community health centers in the Tar Heel state will receive a $20 million investment.
Two of those health centers are in the mountains -- Blue Ridge Community Health Services in Hendersonville and Western North Carolina Community Health Services, Inc. in Asheville.
Together, those two locations will receive more than $1.1 million -- with a little more than $738,000 going to the center in Hendersonville and nearly $400,000 headed to the one in Asheville.
The overall $20.1 million in grant money will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as part of the Act's Captial Improvement Program.
The C.I.P. supports equipment updates, along with construction and renovation at community health centers.
Plus, it allows for the centers to modernize health information technology systems and start using electronic medical records that will simplify the health care process and pass on reduced costs to consumers.
The grants will also increase health care access for millions in North Carolina, and comes at a time when more Americans are finding themselves uninsured because of the sour economy and high health costs.
In all, those C.I.P. grants will help with the construction, repair, and renovation of more than 1,500 health centers throughout the country.
