Progress Energy's Arden coal ash pond makes the EPA's latest hazard list.
The Environmental Protection Agency has posted a list of "High Hazard Potential" impoundment's that contain coal ash. The list includes 44 sites at 26 different coal burning electric utility facilities. The list was released because of public concern after the 2008 coal ash spill in Kingston, Tennessee. The Arden ash pond is considered safe and the dam is structurally sound. The site made the list because of its proximity to Interstate 26 and the French Broad River. If there was a breach then someone would likely lose a their life based on the location next to the interstate.
