In advance of the 57th WNC Sports Awards Banquet sponsored by Ingles, WLOS.com will honor each of the 124 WNC high school athletes and teams chosen as finalists.

Today’s honorees are finalists for the McKinney/Nationwide Insurance Division Male Team in a Major Sport Award.

The finalists are Reynolds High football, Reynolds soccer and Roberson baseball.

Coach Shane Laws’ Reynolds football team continued its domination of local opponents en route to a 14-2 record and a berth in the state 3A championship game.

In a streak that started midway through the 2014 season, the Rockets have won 33 consecutive games against Western North Carolina opponents, including 26 straight against conference foes.

The 2017 team outscored its opponents 627-207 and won 13 straight games.

The Rockets have won three straight conference titles while going undefeated in league play each season and claimed the 2017 Western Regional title.

Off the field, the Rockets’ team grade-point average was over 3.00.

The Reynolds soccer team reached the state 3A state title game to highlight a 23-3-2 season.

Coach Patrick Gladys’ squad claimed the Western Regional title and won a second straight conference championship.

Over four seasons, the Rockets have won three league titles, appeared in two state semifinal games and one state title game.

The players volunteer for youth soccer camps and have a team grade-point average of over 3.70.

The Roberson baseball team capped a 31-3 season last spring with the 4A state title.

The Rams outscored eight playoff opponents 55-20 and finished as the top-ranked baseball team in the state under coach Eric Filipek.

Four players were named all-state after going undefeated in conference play for a second straight season.

The players volunteer their time to work with mentally and physically challenged kids through the Ted. E. Tourist Baseball League.

The 57th WNC Sports Awards Banquet is set for May 6 at Omni Grove Park Inn. Tickets are available at wncsportsawards.org.
