Beyond the Scoreboard: Greensboro, Wofford advance into SoCon tourney semis
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) —
Top seed UNC Greensboro and No. 5 Wofford won quarterfinal games Saturday afternoon in the Southern Conference men’s tournament at U.S. Cellular Center.
Greensboro (25-7) advanced with a 72-58 win over No. 8 The Citadel and Wofford dispatched No. 4 Mercer 73-53 to advance to Sunday’s 4 p.m. semifinal.
The Spartans and Terriers will play each other, with the winner moving on to Monday’s 9 p.m. title game.
The Citadel (11-21) led by four points early in the second half before going scoreless for more than nine minutes. Greensboro took control with a 12-0 run to win the program’s 50th game over the past two seasons.
Demetrius Troy had 14 points, among five players to reach double figures for the Spartans.
Zane Najdawi led the Bulldogs with 17 points.
Wofford (21-11) never trailed in its win over Mercer. The Terriers got 22 points from Nathan Hoover, including four 3-pointers, and 18 points and 10 rebounds from Cameron Jackson.
Jordan Strawberry had 18 points and Stephon Jelks added 16 for the Bears (18-14).
