Beyond the Scoreboard: Memorial services announced for Larry Hunter

Two memorial services are planned for retired Western Carolina basketball coach Larry Hunter, who died last week after a stroke.

A service in Cary is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service.

On May 19, a 1 p.m. service will be held in Athens, Ohio, at The Plains United Methodist Church. Interment will be in West Union Street Cemetery.

Hunter coached college basketball for 47 seasons, finishing with 702 career wins. He is among 40 college basketball coaches with at least 700 wins.

His last 13 seasons were in Cullowhee, where he won 193 games as head coach of the Catamounts. He left the program in March at age 68.
