The Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, presented by Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, is now accepting public applications for the Class of 2018.

That class will be inducted at the 57th WNC Sports Awards Banquet, presented by Ingles, on May 6 at Omni Grove Park Inn.

The banquet, conducted by the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club, honors the top high school athletes and teams in WNC with 20 awards and 10 scholarships.

Last year a record 850 people attended the banquet.

Established in 1978, the WNC Sports Hall of Fame has a total of 83 athletes, coaches and administrators.

A committee directed by Hall of Fame President Jim Coman accepts nominations to the hall and makes the final decisions on inductees.

Qualifications for nominations include:

* A native of WNC who has been outstanding in this or any other region, bringing recognition to themselves or WNC.

* A non-native of Western North Carolina who has been outstanding through their long-standing contributions to sports in this region.

* All candidates must be inactive in their primary field of participation. This rule may be suspended at the discretion of the board. Candidates who have completed their scholastic or professional careers and are participating in senior or alternate sports careers are eligible for consideration.

* A candidate upon reaching age 65 becomes eligible without regard to the level of current activity within their sport. Thus, an active candidate having attained that age would not need an exception.

The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31. All nominations should include as complete a list as possible of career achievements of the nominee.

Murphy High football coach David Gentry and retired Asheville Tourists executives Ron and Carolyn McKee were the 2017 inductees.
