WLOS WNC Top 10 Football Poll: Week 8

Same 10 teams as last week for the first time this season and just one change in the order, with Christ School and Mitchell flip flopping at Nos. 5 and 6 after the Mountaineers’ first loss of the season.

1. Reynolds (6-1, 4-0)

As if the Rockets aren’t already good enough, they get the good fortune of two weeks to prepare for their upcoming showdown that will for all practical purposes decide the winner of the Western Mountain Athletic 3-A Conference.

Friday’s game – home vs. Asheville

2. Franklin (7-0, 1-0)

After getting Mountain Six 2-A Conference play going with a tough 21-13 win at Hendersonville, the Panthers face another challenge this week against a fellow contender for the regular-season title.

Friday’s game – home vs. Brevard

3. Mountain Heritage (6-0, 1-0)

Beating their neighboring-county rival and biggest threat to a Western Highlands Conference rival for a third consecutive year, the Cougars’ 30-20 win over Mitchell also stamped them as the heavy favorite for a third straight regular-season title.

Friday’s Game – home vs. Owen

4. Murphy (6-1, 2-0)

An off week for the Bulldogs, who will try in their next game to give coach David Gentry a state record. Gentry (386-190 overall, 330-115 in his 35th year at Murphy) is tied with Maiden’s Tom Brown for the most wins at one school.

Friday’s game – home vs. Hayesville

5. Christ School (6-0)

The Greenies continue to rout opponents and look like a championship team, dominating Rabun Gap (Ga.) 49-0 as they march toward the goal of a third straight private school state title game appearance.

Friday’s Game –at Charlotte Latin

6. Mitchell (6-1, 0-1)

The last two years, the Mountaineers have overcome a regular-season loss to Mountain Heritage to win a combined seven playoff games, advancing to the state title game in 2015 and the semifinal round last year. This team is good enough to do that again.

Friday’s game –home vs. Madison

7. Brevard (6-1, 1-0)

The Blue Devils opened Mountain Six 2-A Conference play with an impressive win over East Henderson to stretch their winning streak to six games. Now they get a shot at the league’s preseason favorite.

Friday’s Game – at Franklin

8. Cherokee (7-0, 2-0)

The Braves keep piling up wins and points, this time 39-21 over Rosman. Cherokee is chasing its first Smoky Mountain 1-A Conference championship since 2007.

9. Pisgah (5-2, 1-0)

The Bears look like contenders for the Mountain Six 2-A Conference after opening league play with a 35-26 win over Smoky Mountain.

10. Asheville (5-3, 5-0)

The Cougars’ fifth straight win was their most impressive, coming back from a 16-0 deficit to take a 30-16 win over Tuscola, their first victory against a team with a winning record. Now comes a major showdown against their biggest rival.
