In advance of the 57th WNC Sports Awards Banquet sponsored by Ingles, WLOS.com will honor each of the 118 WNC high-school athletes and teams chosen as finalists.

Today the honorees are the finalists for the Mills Manufacturing Division II Female Team in an Olympic Sport.

The finalists include Asheville School tennis, Carolina Day cross country and Carolina Day track and field.

** The Asheville School tennis team went through the regular season undefeated (12-0) and won the Carolinas Athletic Association regular-season championship for a seventh straight season.

The Blues had four all-conference selections, including Player of the Year Sarah Abernethy, Rachel Kuehn, Kirina Shah and Lille Bridges.

The team finished fifth in the state tournament and its top six players have an average GPA of 4.018.

** The Carolina Day cross country squad won its fourth straight NCISAA state 2A title, giving the school 12 state championships in that sport.

Coach Mark Driscoll’s squad also won its second straight Buncombe County Championship, with the Wildcats’ top five runners placing in the top 10 to earn all-county honors.

Five runners posted times under 20 minutes and four were named all-state.

** Driscoll also coached the Carolina Day track and field team to a dominant win in the NCISAA state 2A meet, finishing nearly 80 points ahead of the second-place team.

The title was the second in third year for the Wildcats, who finished second in 2016.

The team posted WNC’s best times in the 400 meters and 3,200 meters, was second in the discus and second and third in the 1,600 meter-run.
